May 2007 Newsletter

Dear Associates,

Last week was our last board meeting for this fiscal year.  Mike Westerfield spoke before dinner about the current financial situation and challenges facing Rochester College.  Any of us who live in Michigan know how challenging our own personal finances are right now; well they are magnified for Rochester College.  When times get hard, many people stop giving to good works and Rochester College is definitely a good work.  But the good work goes on.  Mike spoke of many incidents where students came to him at graduation last week and thanked him for Rochester College and the way their time there has influenced and changed their lives.  We have had a part in that influence and life changing experience.  God knows what we may never know.  We are told that one plants the seed and another waters it but God makes it grow.  We may never see the harvest, but God will and He will reward those who plant and those who water.  Make sure that you are planting or watering.  Please pray for the college and pray personally about continuing the support you have been giving to the college and, if at all possible, try increasing the amount that you have been giving, God will certainly bless you for it.

If you possibly could this month, write a check to help us meet our commitments to Rochester College.  If everyone thinks that someone else will, not one will.  Eat at home one night instead of eating out and send that amount to the Associates.  Love is all about sacrifice for whom or what we love and we love Rochester College and what they are accomplishing.

This will be my last newsletter article as my presidency is coming to an end on June 1st.  I want to thank all of you for the blessings that you have given me during these two years.  I know that I have been prayed for by many Associates and that has been such a blessing to me.  Nothing is more important that the prayers of those who care for you.  I pray that God continues to bless each an every one of you in ways you never imagined.  I look forward to seeing you at the next Associates meeting.

Remember to pray for the Associates and Rochester College as they work to share Christ with the world.

Your sister in service,
Linda Jones
President

Rochester College    Back to Top

Last weekend we witnessed another graduation at Rochester College.  I don’t believe I will ever get weary of attending our graduation ceremonies because every year so many great stories cross that stage to receive well earned degrees.

This year we cheered the grandmother who after many years returned to college to finally complete that long awaited degree.  What a joy to visit with her husband, children, and grandchildren after the ceremony and witness first hand the pride they had in her.  Another graduate was diagnosed, treated, and conquered her cancer she developed while completing her degree.  To hear her credit her professors and classmates for supporting her and giving her the courage to persevere was indeed emotional.

One young man came to us from the inner-city of Detroit.  His single parent mother raised him in a one room apartment and instilled in him good values she hoped would lead him to a different life.  Saturday he graduated and is looking forward to working and providing a different life for him and his mother.

These are but a few of the stories of our graduates.  Our mission continues at Rochester College.  Our solid academic community is built upon our services to Jesus Christ.  When that happens, lives are changed!  Thank you for helping this mission continue.

Blessings,
Michael W. Westerfield, Ph.D.
President

Let’s Revive the Pioneer Spirit!

Over the years, the Associates have done the largest part of our fundraising during the summer.  For many years, we worked tirelessly for Queen’s Votes.  Last year, instead of a Queen’s race, we had the Summer Chapter Challenge.  This summer, we would like to raise funds for the PIONEER SPIRIT AWARD.  Here is how it will work.

Each chapter will work toward earning an honorary Pioneer Membership for one of their members.  We will award a Pioneer Pin to the three members who have the most funds raised.  Beginning May 9, 2007, chapters can begin having fundraisers and accepting donations to assure their candidate earns one of the three Honorary Pioneer Pins.  As money is raised, turn it in to your chapter treasurer, who will turn it in as it is collected to Ann Luchsinger, Assistant Treasurer.  In the July, August, and September Newsletters, we will publish the total raised to date.  However, we will not know the final total and who will earn their Pioneer Pins until our General Meeting in October.

The last time we had a Queen’s race, we raised $14,000 (with one candidate).  Last summer, in the Summer Chapter Challenge, we raised $11,000.  I know we can do better!  Our GOAL for this PIONEER SPIRIT summer is $15,000.  It would be fabulous if each chapter would set your own goal for the summer, and keep your own “thermometer” so that everyone in your chapter knows how you are doing.

If you are not currently associated with a local chapter but would like to contribute to help someone win a Pioneer Pin, just send your funds to Ann Luchsinger and specify the person to receive the credit for your contribution.  Those of you who currently live in far off lands like Florida, Missouri, and Arizona used to belong to a chapter here in Michigan or Ohio.  Please consider having a fundraiser or two this summer and sending the proceeds to help your former chapter’s Pioneer Candidate.  If you would rather, we would love to have you nominate someone from your out-of-state-group to win one of the Pioneer Pins!

Please submit your PIONEER SPIRIT nominee to Lynne Stewart by June 1, 2007 at lestewart@rc.edu or to Lynne Stewart, Rochester College, 800 West Avon Road, Rochester Hills, MI  48307.  Remember, we would like to have someone from every chapter, as well as at-large-members.  Your chapter must commit to raising at least $1000, double the price of a Pioneer Membership.

Please turn in all PIONEER SPIRIT money to Ann Luchsinger, 1830 Washington Road, Rochester Hills, MI  48306.

Start working NOW!  The PIONEER SPIRIT contest begins May 9, 2007 and ends September 24, 2007.

Scrip    Back to Top

What’s coming up in June? GRADUATION OPEN HOUSES, WEDDINGS, AND SHOWERS!   SCRIP Gift Cards make PERFECT gifts for all those occasions! We have gift cards for Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Babies-R-Us, Bath and Body Works, Blockbuster, Borders, Linen’s N Things, J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, and countless restaurants.  What newly married couple or graduate would not like dinner out on YOU!  Contact your Chapter’s SCRIP coordinator for your special orders.  If you currently do not have a SCRIP coordinator in your chapter, please contact Ann Luchsinger for information on establishing one!

ATTENTION GARDENERS!

We have an exciting new opportunity to raise money for RC this year.  We have an agreement with Bordine Nursery where we can buy their gift cards for 15% off!!!  They are $20 cards, are good for one year, and can be used for any Bordine merchandise.  Some of their merchandise is a little more expensive than other nurseries, but their quality is excellent.  If everyone would use Bordine’s for just half of their gardening needs this year, it would make a big difference in what we can give to RC.  Contact Lynne Stewart, Norma Morris, or me to obtain the cards.

MEIJER

All of you who have been using the Meijer Community Rewards program are aware of the changes in this program.  You have to re-enroll in this plan using your current account number and the Associates ID number of 918175.  Briefly, we will earn 1% of every purchase (vs. having to purchase a minimum in the past before we could earn any money.)  The 1% only applies to purchases using a Meijer credit card.  If you pay with cash or any debit card, we will earn 0.5%.  If you use any other credit card, we will earn nothing.

REMEMBER

You can view or print the current (updated daily) list of Scrip available at any time.  If you have a computer or know someone who does, log onto www.glscrip.com and click on “Retailer List.”  You can list it alphabetically, by category (Apparel & Accessories, Department Stores, Dining, etc.) or detailed, which shows the rules for each retailer.

Note:  Farmer Jack and Bordine’s will not appear on these lists – we have separate agreements with them

SCRIP isn’t just to give away – you can use it every day!

- Ann Luchsinger
