Associates Newsletter July 2008 Dear Ladies, We have many things going on right now that are very exciting to your board. The details are in other parts of this newsletter. I hope you have projects going to support our Pioneer Spirit Award. If you can run a special person you would like to receive this award, other chapters would be glad to support you in your efforts. We need people, young and old, who can work at the Grand Prix on Aug 30th selling programs. If we get enough volunteers, we can split into two shifts so that we don’t all have to work the entire day. We are planning to look into the possibilities that are available for us to work concession or program stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills and at Comerica Park. We don’t yet know the outcome, but the board is continually trying to come up with new ideas for raising money that don’t cost us a lot of money – just our time and someone else’s money! I am inviting all the chapter chairs to come to our August board meeting to hear first hand what we are trying to do to raise money. An easy money maker that we can all be involved in is to use scrip for our gasoline, food, clothing, eating out and so on and on. If you do not have anyone selling scrip in your chapter you can call Ann Luchsinger and she will see that you get it. I know at times we feel like we have done all we can, and don’t know what else to do. We just need to keep in mind that God will help us if we will try. Please keep going with your head held high. Many hands make light work. Please soar with the eagles and do not grow weary. God will continue to bless us. Yours in Christ, Jeannette Schiele President
Click banner to visit Rochester College website. Back to TopAs a newcomer to the leadership team at Rochester College, there are a few things I would like you to know about me. My wife, Myra, and I have fallen in love with Michigan, Rochester College, and our new role with the school. And I know how important your work is to its future. We have three children and nine grandchildren. We feel the same way you do about wanting them to have a quality education. Even more, we want them to be Christian adults whose lives give glory to God. (And, yes, we are already recruiting them to Rochester College!) The Associates have helped the school erect key buildings, fund important programs, and recruit quality students. Your help is even more critical now than ever before. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we must continue to build for the next 50 years. So please come to the campus during the coming academic year to hear Elie Wiesel, Max Lucado, and Dave Ramsey. Please continue to encourage the high school students in your churches and families to attend school here. Please keep up your good work of donating money to the college and pooling your efforts to fund programs and scholarships for our students. If you have suggestions or questions you want to direct to me, please write or call. The Associates are important to Rochester College, and you have an important voice in who we are and what we do. Sincerely, Rubel Shelly Interim President 50 year celebration
In Memoriam
Betty Porter was born July 8, 1914 in Winchester, TN and passed away June 9, 2008. Betty was a charter member of the Rochester Church of Christ and a Lifetime Associate. Some of her latest efforts were making Angel pins to sell and helping do inventory for Hancock Fabrics.
Are Gas Prices Making You Mad? Back to Top We are all frustrated with the price of gasoline. But the fact is, we all buy gas. Do you fill up your vehicle at any of the following gas stations? BP Chevron Gulf Exxon Marathon Mobil Shell Speedway Sunoco Texaco
If you do, did you know that you can use SCRIP cards for all of these? If we are paying high prices, we might as well make a little money for Rochester College at the same time! Many of the gas cards are in $25 denominations, but some come in $50, $100, and even $250 cards. Please consider using SCRIP to buy gas – every little bit helps! For a complete list of SCRIP participants, go to http://www.glscrip.com/retailerlist/index.aspx and click on Print a list. If you do not have access to a computer, contact Lynne Stewart at 248-218-2092. She will send you a list in the mail. Five hundred families buying $50 a month in SCRIP gift cards could raise $18,000 for Rochester College in one year. WE CAN DO THAT! Please contact Ann Luchsinger or Lynne Stewart for more information or to place your order. Remember, you can pay with cash, checks, Master Card, or Visa!

Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Fundraiser Back to Top Saturday, August 30, 2008 Labor Day is coming up in a few weeks, and we will be selling programs at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix on Saturday, August 30th. We need at least 25 people to work 8-10 booths. We will make about $1,000 for our work that day. Please contact me at jharper@rc.edu, or call 248-212-7143 if you are interested in helping with this fundraiser. Also, please take it to your chapters to see if anyone else is interested in helping with this. If we get more than 25 people, we can split the day into two shifts, otherwise we'll probably be there from around 8 am until about 6-7 pm Saturday night. Parking will be free, and of course, we can carpool down there. We will park and be shuttled over to Belle Isle. You can bring your lunch (there will be a place to put it) and they are good about bringing around drinks to the workers all day.
Even if you have already let me know you're interested, please reconfirm and let me know if you can do all day, or if you prefer morning or afternoon shift. I have had a number of people contact me about this, so I think we'll be able to do two shifts. Thanks for your enthusiasm for this project! Don't forget, high school and college kids can do this too. Good way for them to get service points. Thanks, Julie Harper
Turn Leftovers into Dollars! Back to Top Raise Significant Funds Without Asking for Money! Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? The Board of Trustees thought so! Rochester College has recently partnered with the organization Project 12 Baskets. They auction items on the internet, and share the profits with non-profit organizations like Rochester College. Their home base and warehouse is actually in Rochester Hills! The Associates do not yet have all the information we need to participate in this ongoing fundraising effort, but we will be getting it soon. So why are we talking about it NOW? Start cleaning out your basement, attic, and closets, and put these items aside. If you are willing to donate the items, Project 12 Baskets will sell them for us and we will earn money. Hot sale items include cameras, vintage kitchenware, musical instruments, electronics, laptop computers, furniture, televisions, and video games. But they sell most ANYTHING except clothing. More information will come in the September newsletter, but you can start the cleaning and sorting process now!
There is Still Time to Enter the Pioneer Spirit Award Contest! Over the years, the Associates have done the largest part of our fundraising during the summer. We were hoping that this year would be no exception. However, to date we only have one Chapter who has submitted a candidate for the Pioneer Spirit Award. The Brighton chapter is raising money to earn an honorary Pioneer Pin for Mabel Smith. It is not too late to submit someone from your Chapter, past or present. You might consider running a former member of your Chapter who has moved away, or an associate that your chapter would like to honor who was not part of your Chapter. Some names that come to mind are MaryEtta Whitelaw, Raida Thomas, Helen Williams, and Mildred Freeland. We still have THREE months to raise money. If your chapter is just not in a place to run a candidate, please consider doing a couple of projects this summer and supporting Mabel. Even with only one candidate, we could raise $15,000 if we really tried. Currently, about $2400 has been raised by two different chapters. That means we have $12,600 to go. There are eight active Associate chapters. That means each chapter would only need to raise $1575 to reach our $15,000 goal. WE CAN DO IT IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER! If you are not currently associated with a local chapter but would like to contribute to the Pioneer Spirit contest, please send your funds directly to Ann Luchsinger. Those of you who currently live in far off lands like Florida, Missouri, and Arizona used to belong to a chapter here in Michigan or Ohio. Please consider having a fundraiser or two this summer and sending the proceeds to help this summer fundraiser. Please submit your PIONEER SPIRIT nominee to Lynne Stewart as soon as possible by email or mail to Lynne Stewart, Rochester College, 800 West Avon Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48307. Your candidate must raise at least $1000 to qualify, double the price of a Pioneer Membership. Please turn in all PIONEER SPIRIT money to Ann Luchsinger. Remember, our GOAL for this PIONEER SPIRIT summer is $15,000. If we did that, we could pay our entire pledge for the Athletic Center in October. That would give us the rest of the year to work on scholarships and endowment! Start working NOW! The PIONEER SPIRIT contest ends October 1, 2008. Mable Smith Biography Mable was born to Balard and Millie Neely on August 14, 1923. She was born in Campton, Kentucky, which is located in Wolfe County. As a child, Mable and her family moved to Michigan. When Mable was a teenager, she was introduced to Manfred Smith, who worked with Mable’s brother Tom Neely. Mable and Manfred fell in love and married in 1942. The happy couple was married in Mable’s birth town, Campton, Kentucky. In 1984, Mable became a Christian and was baptized by Minister Brad McFaul, at the Brighton Church of Christ. Mable has been an active member of the Brighton Church of Christ since becoming a Christian. Mable’s husband Manfred was greatly influenced by Mable’s Christian example and also became a member of the Brighton Church of Christ. Manfred was active with the church up until his death in 2006. Mable and Manfred had a fairytale romance. They shared many activities together. Both Mable and Manfred enjoyed going to church, spending time with their family, working in their vegetable and flower gardens, and playing cards. Mable and Manfred were the proud parents of 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Mable and Manfred’s family all still live nearby in Michigan. Mable has been a member of the Rochester College Associates for over 19 years. She attends every Associate fundraising event faithfully and enjoys cooking her famous Chicken and Dumplings in order to support Rochester College. Mable is a true role model to us all. With her infectious smile and laugh, she always has something positive to say to everyone. No matter what trials and tribulations she may be facing, Mable always makes time for others. Mable goes out of her way to make sure that you are doing well and she always lets you know that she is praying for you. Her life is a shining example to us all and anyone who knows her would say that their life is richer for knowing Mable Smith.
